Aasif Sheikh to Lumbini Lions: The NPL 2026 Auction Move Explained

Forget the overseas headlines for a second. The most interesting move of the NPL 2026 window was a Nepali one.

Lumbini Lions won Aasif Sheikh at the July auction after the bidding hit the Rs2 million ceiling and the tie was settled by a lucky draw. The Kathmandu Post covered the auction.

How it happened

Sheikh had been Janakpur Bolts' marquee player. When Janakpur released him, he went into the auction with a base price of Rs1.5 million, the only player in the 155-strong pool starting that high.

Several teams wanted him. Once the bids reached Rs2 million, nobody could go higher, so it came down to a draw. Lumbini got lucky. That is the whole story, no secret transfer fee, no bidding war beyond the cap.

Why it is a good fit for Lumbini

Sheikh keeps wicket and opens the batting. In a league where only four overseas players can play, having a Nepali who does two jobs is gold. It could let Lumbini use an overseas slot on a bowler instead of a keeper.

Lumbini had already kept seven players, including captain Rohit Kumar Paudel. Adding Sheikh to a title-winning core is the kind of move that makes other teams groan.

And Janakpur?

Janakpur retained only five players, fewer than anyone else, and made spinner Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi their new marquee. It is clearly a reset. Whether it works, we will find out. There is no need to invent a falling out. Sheikh was in demand, which says plenty.

Auction numbers

37 players were bought from the pool of 155. That is just the auction. Retained players and later signings sit on top of it, so do not mistake 37 for the size of the league.
